The six types of communities: Which one fits your brand?

Did you know that there are six different types of communities? Each type brings people together in a different way. If you choose the right match for your brand with the matching strategy, you will make your brand a place that people want to belong to and feel connected to. But how exactly does that work? Here are the six types of communities, with examples from our work.

1. Community of practice

These are people who are in the same industry or have something in common with each other within their profession. This community is about learning and getting better at your profession. Think of groups of professionals exchanging tips and knowledge together. For the Regional Economy Knowledge Network, we worked with entrepreneurs and advisers who helped each other get more out of their SME clients. That way, no one had to figure everything out on their own and members helped each other.

2. Community of interest

Here it is all about shared interests, such as travelling, cooking or music. Campercontact is a good example of this. Everyone who loves camping comes together, shares tips and writes reviews, together building the best platform for themselves. With a good ambassador programme, we turn these fans into an active community where users feel engaged with the brand.

3. Community of Action

Going for something together – that is the power of a community of action. Think sustainability, social projects or joint actions. This type of community is all about ideals and getting results, big or small.

4. Community of Location

A community of location is all about the place where you live, work or just like to be. For Park Lingezegen, for example, we involved local residents and visitors in events. The result? A friendly and involved group of people who together make the area even more fun and are happy with it.

5. Community of Circumstance

People come together here because they are in the same situation. Whether it’s parenthood, being a student, or in the case of cancer.co.uk, dealing with a life-changing illness. Here it’s all about support, recognition and just a safe place where you can be yourself and find similar ones.

6. Community of Purpose

This type is about a shared mission or goal. At Scale&Grow, we help entrepreneurs grow their businesses together. With inspiring meetings and an active online community, they can take each other further and learn from each other’s experiences.

Which community suits you?
