A strong platform starts with the people who use it
Together with METT, Unity Agency explored what patients, loved ones, volunteers and people with lived experience truly need from a digital platform. For the ALS Patient Association, Huntington Association and Endometriosis Foundation, we identified needs, barriers and opportunities for improvement.
The ALS Patient Association, Huntington Association and Endometriosis Foundation want to support people as effectively as possible throughout their patient and loved ones journey. A digital platform plays an important role in this. But does the platform still meet the needs of its audience at different stages of that journey?
Those needs differ from person to person and change throughout the patient journey.
The challenge therefore went beyond assessing the technology. We wanted to discover how information, support, lived experience and peer contact could be better connected.
Together with METT, we carried out a quick scan for each organisation. Through interviews, surveys and analyses, we explored how patients, loved ones, volunteers and people with lived experience use the platform and what they need from it.
We looked at where people search for information, the barriers they experience, when the need for contact arises and what helps people feel seen, supported and connected.
Unity Agency focused on community and communication. How do people find their way around? How do you encourage involvement? And which forms of participation fit their needs? METT focused on the software and system. How does the platform support these needs and where are the opportunities for technical improvement?
The quick scans revealed where each organisation can take targeted steps to better align its platform and community with its audience.
One important insight was that improvement does not always require more information, new initiatives or additional features. Often, the biggest opportunity lies in connecting, organising and highlighting what is already there more effectively.
For each organisation, we translated the research findings into concrete opportunities and a clear roadmap. This gave all three patient organisations insight into what their audience needs, along with practical steps to move forward. Helping people find what they need more easily while also making them feel seen, supported and connected.
